Here are a few words directly from our sellers…
Our favorite things about the home are…
We fell in love with this home the first time we walked through the front door. The big open foyer and natural light felt perfect for our family of four, including two young kids (at the time). We have now raised the kids up, from the elementary school we could walk to, through graduating from Weddington High School, and this house has grown and adapted along with us.There are a few big open gathering spaces which gave our kids space to have groups of friends over and still feel comfortable. My husband and I could retreat to our room or the den and still keep an eye on them while giving them privacy.
I have always loved the master bathroom and my giant closet; I’ve also loved the spacious kitchen. I am an avid cook and baker, and I prepare almost every meal we eat. All the counter space and storage space for my small appliances and gadgets has been a real bonus.
When we were shopping for this home, we were looking for the perfect place to raise our kids up through high school and my favorite thing about this house is that it has more than lived up to our expectations.
What we love about the neighborhood
Brookhaven is a special neighborhood and we have always felt proud to say we lived here. The location, especially since we are near the main entrance, is very convenient – within 2 minutes of leaving the house we can be on Antioch Church Rd. headed to Wesley Chapel/Weddington High; or Weddington-Matthews Rd. headed up to Providence Rd./485 or into downtown Matthews.
The amenities are outstanding and unrivaled in other South Charlotte neighborhoods. Even though my kids are older now, all their friends still ask to come over to the Brookhaven pool as a guest. Our family has taken advantage of most of the amenities over the years – when my son was in middle school he and his friends met at the basketball courts all the time. My daughter took tennis lessons. We have rented the club house for parties, and we all have used the gym.
Actually, even though we are into personal fitness and there are many fitness clubs in the area, between our home equipment and the Brookhaven gym, none of us has ever paid for a separate membership elsewhere. My husband and I also walk the Brookhaven trail and neighborhood at least 4 times a week, and I am so thankful the community managers maintain the trail and facilities so well. I think the new park is going to be a really great addition to the community.
We knew when we moved here we would love all the amenities, but the few things I hadn’t known in advance were that my kids would benefit so much from knowing so many classmates that lived right here. Our kids went through the Weddington public school system and having a variety of classmates in the neighborhood meant we could always find a carpool or a friend to hang out with nearby. However, they also made friends with kids from private schools and home school that they would have never met otherwise, except that in this neighborhood kids are friendly and play outside a lot.
The hesitation I had about moving into a big neighborhood was privacy. However, Brookhaven is unique because I feel like there is not one set personality that lives here. We have been as private or as social as we’ve wanted, and have evolved as our kids grew up. When they were younger, I was more social with all my neighbors with kids the same age – going to the pool, having playdates, etc. Today, my husband and I see a few people at the gym and out walking that we have gotten to know. Now that our lives are not so kid-centered, we are less involved with the neighborhood events and that’s been great too because there is no pressure to participate in anything. I feel you can do as much or as little as you want here and your neighbors will respect you no matter what.
What we love about South Charlotte
When we moved here the area was just starting to be developed, and it was good. Now the area is GREAT. Probably the biggest addition has been Waverly, on Providence Rd. It has added so many great stores and restaurants, we don’t really have to go Uptown anymore to have the best experiences.
My husband commutes to the University City area every day from our home and has never had a bad commute up 485. While the traffic is steady, it is predictable, so it’s easy to plan around.
Probably for our family the best thing about South Charlotte has been the Union County public schools because our kids got the best education, made great friends, had good teachers, played on good sports teams, and got into great colleges.
It’s nice that we also got to live in a really safe area where they could learn to drive and venture out on their own with confidence that they were safer here than they would be in many other communities.
Our favorite restaurants
This is an ever-changing list because more keep opening up! For fancy dinners we usually reserve a table at Ted’s Montana Grill or The Porter’s House. My 18 year old daughter meets up with her friends after school almost every day at Panera in Waverly to do homework. We get takeout from Red Bowl in the Publix Shopping Plaza about 5 minutes away. Poppyseed’s bagels is the place we go to most. My husband and I like to walk there on Saturday mornings for bagels and coffee. We also like to go to La Unica in Indian Trail for Mexican. They have the best pico de gallo we’ve ever had.
Our favorite grocery store
This is also hard to answer since I like so many of them and I cook almost every meal at home. My main store is Publix off Fincher Farm Rd. (about 5 minutes away) but I also often go to the Harris Teeter just out the back entrance of Brookhaven on Chestnut, especially for subs on Friday (they have a $5 special) and for Starbucks (they have a store inside HT). However, I also shop at Trader Joe’s and WholeFoods regularly (about 15 minutes away) and lately I’ve been going to the new Harris Teeter in Rea Farms (about 15 minutes away) because they have so many new items. Finally, my favorite place to shop is Lidl on Johnston Rd. (20 minutes away) for their organic produce and low prices. Overall, you could get everything you need at the Harris Teeter on Chestnut, but if you’re a cook or a foodie you have access to so many different options within a short drive.
